The Takeaways:

  • The new design is being tested on the pages of public figures including actors, authors, creators, and a small handful of bands and books.
  • Without the Like button and the number of page Likes features, only the Follow button and follower count will be shown on the page.
  • The new “Edit Access” screen allows page managers to assign various management tasks such as who can create page content and ads, respond to page comments, and send direct messages.
What happened?

These changes come at a time when the company acknowledges the importance of facilitating connection with online communities as many people continue to practice social distancing.

In the past, having both the Like and Follow functions has made it a confusing and messy task for page owners to measure their reach. Removing this distinction will make it easier for owners to engage with followers who are genuinely interested in the page and its contents, while also better reflecting the page’s true reach.

Additionally, the new format will group related data like mentions and post reactions when sending updates to reduce the notifications received by each page.

Clearer analytics

The update intends to simplify navigating the Page Insights, which owners use to track analytics related to the page’s performance, especially when page ads are running.

Page owners will be able to get to these insights from the page itself or even directly from a post. From the Insights section, they’ll gain access to insights including top-performing posts and a new metric that reveals the page’s audience overlap with its connected Instagram account.
